Everyday tool

Aquarium Volume Calculator

Use tank dimensions, water level, substrate, and decorations to estimate water volume, setup weight, and water-change amounts.

Displacement is estimated; inside measurements give a closer starting point

Estimate method

The calculator estimates solid displacement by substrate type, then deducts the decoration percentage. Enter rocks, wood, internal filters, and similar items as one combined percentage.

Estimated result

Actual water volume49.3 L13 US gal
Gross capacity66.1 L
At actual water level56.6 L
Substrate deduction− 4.7 L
Decor deduction− 2.6 L
Water weight≈ 49.3 kg
Estimated setup weight≈ 68.4 kg

Estimated setup weight includes water, estimated substrate, and your entered empty-tank/decor/equipment weight. Confirm the stand and floor load separately for large tanks.

Equipment guidePractical starting points based on actual water volume
Recommended heater25 W

Round up to a common heater size; use two smaller heaters for large tanks.

Recommended filter flow52.1 GPH – 78.2 GPH

Nominal flow before media, hose, and head-height losses.

20% water change9.9 L

2.6 US gal

30% / 50% water change14.8 L / 24.7 L

Assumptions applied to this result

The figures below are assumptions used by this tool, not measured product specifications. Display values are rounded; calculations retain intermediate precision.

Setup weight = water + estimated substrate + the entered tank/decor/equipment weight. Decor percentage does not add rock or wood weight automatically. The stand and floor's load capacity are not assessed.

Equipment recommendations are general estimates, not manufacturer specifications. Room temperature, lid, flow restriction, stocking level, and species needs can require different equipment.

Use the water actually held, not just tank capacity

  • Measure the water level

Enter length, width, tank height, and actual water height. Gross capacity and water-level volume are different figures.

  • Account for occupied space

Add substrate type/depth and a decoration percentage. Rock or wood weight is not added by the percentage; include it in the separate weight field.

  • Read the follow-on estimates

Water changes and equipment figures use estimated actual water volume. Setup weight adds water, estimated substrate, and your entered equipment weight.

A 60 cm soil tank

Start with
60×30×36 cm · water 31 cm · soil 5 cm · decor 5%
Check the result
Estimated water 48.7 L · 30% change about 14.6 L

The unrounded volume is 48.735 L: soil uses a 0.5 displacement factor, then decor removes 5% of the remaining volume.
