For character limits
Characters includes spaces and line breaks. No spaces removes whitespace such as spaces, tabs, and line breaks.
For byte limits
Check UTF-8 size. Korean letters, English letters, and emoji take different numbers of bytes even when each looks like one character.
For words and reading time
Words are separated by whitespace. Reading time assumes 300 words per minute and rounds up to a whole minute.

A worked example

Start with: 가 A😀
Check the result: 5 characters · 4 without whitespace · 9 UTF-8 bytes · 2 words

The count is 1 for 가, 1 for the space, 1 for A, and 2 for 😀. It may differ from the number of visible characters.
