1:1 works for square thumbnails, 4:3 for common photos, and 16:9 for video thumbnails and wide banners. Check the platform's recommended pixels when exact dimensions matter.

Place the subject and negative space
Move the crop so faces and important product details remain visible. Leaving space in the direction a subject faces often feels less cramped.
If text will be added later, keep a version with suitable empty space.
Choose an output format
JPG and WebP are efficient for photos; PNG suits transparency and sharp graphics. Enlarging a small crop can expose insufficient pixels.
Avoid an overly narrow crop when a large output is required.
Preserve and inspect the original
